About Me

I'm Geethanjana,

I am Geethanjana Kudaligamage, a Sri Lankan artist living in Sri Lanka and the USA. I am a painter and a printmaker who has practiced art for the last 40-plus years. I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and obtained a master's degree in the same discipline from the State University of New York, USA.

During my artistic journey, I have exhibited my works extensively in Sri Lanka as well as in the USA. In addition, I have received several awards, including the national award of ‘Outstanding Painter of the Year’ Award from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in Sri Lanka.

If I elaborate a little about my art, I must say that most of my works are based on ideas. Even my landscapes or cityscapes are mostly based on symbolic narratives. There is always something to ponder about beneath the pictorial surface of my works. I love colors; for that reason, my works look very colorful. The inspiration for my works usually arrives unexpectedly. A poignant statement of someone, an incident, or a very ordinary object would inspire me to exemplify its symbolic connotations with the critical ideas I have been grappling with for some time. It could be an ordinary object, such as a rocking horse sitting insignificantly in a random corner of a thrift store. The response is a fusion of my new encounters with my thematic agendas that emanate from my experiences. With my new findings, I would continue to struggle with my subject matter, working it through in the hope of gaining insight into it. As always, my work will be a way of coming to grips with my own experiences and ideas.

When I see an inspiring object with some symbolic relations, my creative impulses may ignite, which will bore itself deep into my psyche, where it grows and grows gradually, building relationships between my new findings and my old thematic agendas. In this thinking process, when a subject matter comes to mind, I think of it for an extended period. Then, the basic concept transforms into forms, symbols, and metaphors. Then, if I have any ideas of contemporary socio-political and cultural critique in mind at that point, they begin to intermingle with these day-to-day new findings. They will always relate to my storehouse of cultural memories, their metaphoric relationships, history, and ethical mythical traditions. This is a long process, but of course, it might be the life of many artists. I know I am not the only one experiencing the creative process in this way in the aesthetic universe.
